Mary [00:00:00]:
Hello, my friend. Welcome to another edition of you can call me bossy the podcast. I'm your hostess with the mostest married to Risa Trungali. And today's I'm. I'm going to see if we can keep this one on the shorter side. I've talked about this before, but I wanted to come back to this conversation about consumption versus implementation. And it's coming up again because it actually came up on a client, a one on one client call this week. And it's something that I have talked about a lot with my clients.
Maria Alvarez [00:00:35]:
It's something that I get into the trap of. And so I think it's really important conversation to have, especially for women who are high performers, where we are very much programmed to believe the more we do, the more we'll receive and the happier we'll be. So listening to podcasts, reading books, doing, going to summits, going to trainings, sitting and listening to lectures, whatever that might be, we're really good at all that shit, really good at it. But then when it comes to actually putting the lessons, the habits, the practices into action to actually slow down enough to prioritize actually doing the stuff, we put that to the side. It's like, oh yeah, I want to come back and re watch all those videos or I want to come back and re do some of the practices that were in that book or some of the suggestions that were in on that podcast episode. And so I realize that I am saying this all to you as you are consuming this podcast while you're listening to me, but hopefully this is going to help you get, get motivated. And that's why I want to keep this one short. I want this to be a motivation, inspiration, permission slip for you to prioritize actually taking action.
Maria Alvarez [00:01:58]:
And actually the reason I thought this was important to bring up again is because this is why I actually started the club as a membership. Because I wanted there to be a place where once a month, you actually, for 90 minutes, gave yourself 90 minutes, one time a month, which is not a huge commitment, which is not a huge compromise to focus on yourself, to take care of yourself for 90 minutes. And it's not just a masterclass where you're going to sit and listen to me teach you. It's a workshop. We're working, we're workshopping an idea, a new practice, a way of thinking, a new way of seeing things. And then we actually do a practice of breath work. So these workshops are very interactive. It's not just sitting there and consuming.
Maria Alvarez [00:02:45]:
Which is why if this might be you. You are not participating in the workshop if you just listen to the replay on a walk. So this is why I host the workshops every month live. For you to actually come live if you can. But if you can't come live, then that's where it's like, okay, great, but make sure you actually do the workshop that you actually do. Not just the practice, but then the breath work as well. Because it's important that you implement it. And even if just once a month you implement, you take the time to sit and do the workshop for 90 minutes once a month.
Maria Alvarez [00:03:22]:
That is going to put you so far ahead of you just consuming, consuming, consuming, consuming. Because how many times have you said to somebody, I know that I should be doing this. I know this information, I know this about myself. I know that this is something that might be holding me back. But you don't actually take any kind of action to support yourself in actually moving that knowledge into, into something that's actually going to support you. So this is my way of kind of lighting a fire under your butt. Under my butt? Your butt. Some real truth here, little bit of tough love that consuming without actually implementing is just a waste of your time.
Maria Alvarez [00:04:06]:
Consumption without implementation is just a waste of your time. So don't do that. It's okay to consume. I definitely listen to books on, you know, my walks, but mostly I try and listen to the books. Well, I, I actually try and not listen to like self help books or books that have like, here's something that you should do because I want to be sitting and highlighting so that I can come back. And I've really. That's also part of my implementation is when I take what I learn in a book and I actually teach it in a workshop, then it's actually giving me an opportunity to practice with everybody else. Something that I'm doing right now is every day I'm doing the manifestation 3, 6, 9 meth and also doing one of the lessons from the Ask and it is Given book every day.
Maria Alvarez [00:04:54]:
I'm doing that to help with my identity statement in the Align and Empower project right now is I'm somebody who thinks in magic, not logic. And so part of one of my habits is to actually do this manifestation practice every day. And so I'm actually taking actually the practices of two different books and actually doing them every day. So but I also, sometimes I'm skipping meditation or skipping breath work or whatever because I'm just not finding the time to make those things non negotiables. So this is where I'm kind of kicking all of our butts and reminding all of us that consumption without implementation is just a waste of your time. And if you're looking for a level up, if you're looking to get unstuck, if you're looking for a way to move through where you're at, if you feel like you're hitting your own glass ceiling, if you feel like you're coming up against it, if you feel like you're not hitting your potential, if you're looking through that glass ceiling and you see there is definitely something more for me on the other side, but I don't know how to get there. I would take a look at this pattern. Are you just consuming without actually implementing? And why do we not implement? Cuz it can be really uncomfortable.
Maria Alvarez [00:06:05]:
I actually have a client who's in the Align and Empower project right now. She might be listening. So calling you out a little bit right now. Who she? I've worked with her for a really long time and last year I was teaching some kind of journaling practice for her with the group and she did the journaling practice and it was very uncomfortable for her. It was definitely an edge that she was unwilling to step into and so she just decided not to do it. But major, major, major props to her and celebrating her because she actually came into the Alignment Empower project and was like, okay. So I definitely think one of my habits needs to be the journaling because that's the thing I absolutely do not want to do at all. So oftentimes we are holding ourselves back from implementing the things that we're learning while we're consuming because it's uncomfortable, because it's pushing an edge that we're not familiar with because it starts to bring up stuff that we don't really want to face.
Maria Alvarez [00:06:56]:
And this is where I say that doing this work, either in community or with a coach or with somebody who can hold space for you to get uncomfortable is so powerful. So, so, so, so powerful. So I just actually got off a call with a friend who's a money coach and I'm gonna be doing her tax retreat in Mexico in March. I'm so excited. Oh, Eleanor. Eleanor was on the show. So she's doing a tax retreat in March. And I'm really excited to mix the not so great joy of taxes with the joy of being in a warm weather climate in March and in community with other people.
Maria Alvarez [00:07:37]:
Because money and taxes and all of that stuff, even though I talk about, I talk about money mindset, all the time, because it's something that I need too. And I'm just really excited to do it in community with somebody who can hold space for my discomfort with that. So when it comes to. I want you to get honest with yourself. Are you somebody who consumes and doesn't implement, doesn't take action and that's okay? It doesn't mean anything about you. It doesn't mean you're bad. It doesn't mean you're lazy. It doesn't mean anything.
Maria Alvarez [00:08:04]:
It just means there's probably something there that you need to take a look at. What is that Resistance? What is that stickiness? What is that? That doesn't feel good. But then I also asked. I asked ChatGPT to share a few things with me that I can say here. And the first thing is meant to. To talk about how high achievers often feel productive because they're learning, but what they're really doing is avoiding discomfort. That is the first bullet on ChatGPT. I'm like, oh, I already talked about that.
Maria Alvarez [00:08:35]:
Yeah. So we're, you know, high achievers. We love to stay in our comfort zone, which is achieve, achieve, achieve. Checkbox, checkbox, checkbox. And doing all the things on the checkbox that are really easy for us to just, you know, get off our plate. I'm just getting this stuff off my plate. I'm just getting it done. I'm just, you know, working until midnight every night because, you know, I can, and I'm.
Maria Alvarez [00:08:53]:
I'm a badass and I get my done. And it's like, what are you avoiding when you're doing all that? Ah. Oh. The next one is that implementing is a muscle that needs to be worked. So if it feels uncomfortable, just like the first time you lift weight that isn't super easy to lift, you're now working your muscle in a new way and it needs reps, it needs time, it needs practice. Right. And so you can't just expect it to be super comfortable the first time. If it was super comfy, you'd probably be doing it already.
Maria Alvarez [00:09:30]:
Okay, so a few quotes, because I really love the quote, consumption without implementation is a waste of time. But I totally agree. But here's a few other quotes that I found or chatgpt found. So Tony Robbins says, knowledge isn't power. Applied knowledge is power. Ah. Ah. And then Richard Branson said, you don't need to.
Maria Alvarez [00:09:53]:
You don't learn to walk by following rules. Oh, he's a big rule breaker. You learn by doing and falling over. Agreed. Tell me. And I Forget, Teach me and I may remember. Involve me and I learn. Oh, Benjamin Franklin.
Maria Alvarez [00:10:08]:
I love that one. Because I am such a tangible learner. I learned from doing, which is why I thrived at a vocational high school where I got to use my hands. And being able to do that every other week instead of just sitting in classroom every week, every day, all day long was. So was such an important piece of the puzzle for me to thrive in high school. And why college was really hard for me. Okay. An ounce of action is worth a ton of theory.
Maria Alvarez [00:10:36]:
That's Ralph Waldo Emerson. Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do. Johan Wolfgang Von Go. So Van Gogh. Okay. Oh, Alex Hermosi says most people don't need more information, they need more implementation. Yes.
Maria Alvarez [00:10:55]:
Oh, this one's. These are quotes on over consumption, which is right in line with what we're talking about. Don't confuse consumption with progress. Listening to a hundred podcasts won't change your life. Doing one thing differently will. Oh, my favorite James Clear. Amen, brother. Amen, bruh.
Maria Alvarez [00:11:13]:
Okay. I mean, these are all men. Why did. Why did you give me all men quotes? Okay, whatever. Okay. Information without execution is just entertainment. So essentially what I already said, but that's Tim Ferriss. Stop learning more and start becoming more.
Maria Alvarez [00:11:28]:
And that's Jim Rohn. The biggest gap in the world is between knowing and doing. And that's John Maxwell. So the theme is stop listening to me right now. Pull out your journal, get your meditation music, lay down for a breath, work, go for a walk, get uncomfortable, Hire the coach or join the club. And we'll do it in community every single month in our workshop. And. And then you can also come to a coaching call.
Maria Alvarez [00:11:54]:
But if you want to join the club, the information is below. I'd love to have you send me a DM if you have any questions on that. But this is why I created the clubs. Because implementation without. Or, sorry, consumption without implementation is just a waste of your time. So let's take action together. All right? And that is a true quick hit for under 15 minutes. Thank you for being here.
Maria Alvarez [00:12:17]:
If you found this helpful, please leave a five star review. Share it with somebody you know who might need it. Send me a DM and tell me how much you loved it. And I can't wait to talk to you next time. Have a good day. Bye. Bye.
